According to the Bible, the golden calf was an idol made by the Israelites when Moses went up to Mount Sinai. Mentioned in Exodus 32 and I Kings 12 in the Old Testament, worship of the golden calf is seen as a supreme act of apostasy, the rejection of a faith once confessed. On the painting you see lower leaves of the orange tree try to reach up golden orangers at the top.
